After a much-publicized breakup, Max formed his own band Soulfly in the late 1990s and he continues to record and tour with that band today. Max has also recorded several side projects over the years and has collaborated with a wide array of artists during his tenure with both Sepultura and Soulfy. In 2006 he joined forces with Foofighters’ frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl and contributed to the track "Red War" for Grohl’s self-titled metal project, Probot. Max Cavalera was also involved in the short-lived side project Nailbomb and recently formed the highly touted metal project The Cavalera Conspiracy with his former Sepultura bandmate and brother Igor.
Max left Brazil when he was in Sepultura in the early ‘90s and relocated to Phoenix, Arizona where he still lives today. After leaving Sepultura Max began writing much more experimental and spiritual music with his new band Soulfly with lyrics often times influenced by religion and spirituality. Till this day Max Cavalera is considered as the founder of Brazilian heavy metal and often referred to as the “Bob Marley” of metal.
