As the powerhouse bassist for New York’s groundbreaking thrash-metal band Anthrax, Frank Bello has become somewhat of an icon in the metal community. Born and raised in the Bronx, Bello started playing guitar at the tender age of 12. Idolizing bass heroes such as Geddy Lee, Steve Harris and Geezer Butler; Bello learned how to play bass patterns on guitar before joining his uncle Charlie Benante’s band Anthrax in 1985 to record their sophomore effort Spreading the Disease.
Metal fans worldwide immediately adhered to Bello’s over-the-top stage presence and innovative style and soon after, Anthrax was christened as one of The Big Four of thrash-metal alongside Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. The band followed Spreading the Disease with a series of compelling metal albums fueled by Bello’s ferocious bass work, including the unprecedented Among the Living (1987), State of Euphoria (1988), Persistence of Time (1990), Sound of White Noise (1993), Anthrax Live: The Island Years (1994), Stomp 442 (1995), Volume 8: The Threat Is Real (1998), We’ve Come For You All (2003), Music of Mass Destruction (2004) and Alive 2 (2005). The band broadened their audience considerably after their 1991 collaboration with acclaimed rap group Public Enemy with the re-recording of the track Bring the Noise which catapulted the band to platinum status.
In 2004 Bello took a brief hiatus from Anthrax and joined forces with NY alt-metal group Helmet and performed with the band on their Size Matters tour before reuniting with what many consider the classic Anthrax lineup—Bello, Benante, Scott Ian, Dan Spitz, and Joey Belladonna. Frank has also developed several signature models of Fender bass guitars including the sleek black Frank Bello Signature Bass (2005) and the skull-adorned Squier® Frank Bello Jazz Bass® (2007).
